Saltillo Tile
Saltillo
tile comes from and is the major export from the Mexican city of
Saltillo, Coahuila. Founded in 1577 and growing to a population of
637,000 as of 2005, these Mexicans have been making fabulous tile
for years.

Saltillo tiles vary in color and shape. Tiles are shaped
either by pressing quarried clay with a wooden frame or carving out
the desired shape. There are 2 main types of Saltillo tile which
are: Super Saltillo tile, which have rounded edges and regular
Saltillo, which have square edges. Depending on the raw tile's
placement among other tiles at the time of firing, its color ranges
from yellow to a rich orange. Saltillo tile is highly porous, and
soaks in liquid easily. Saltillo is probably a poor choice for
outdoor installation in extreme climates. Sealer after installation
is a must.
